Now that we know we want to make cleaning fast and easy let’s learn some great minimalist cleaning tips!
Cleaning Made Easy -Tip #1: Less Space
The most obvious way to make cleaning easy is to have less space to clean.
I can personally say that this is one of my favorite things about living in a tiny home. As I mentioned before, I am “the maid” and I clean all week. When I get home my house still needs to be cleaned but I can do regular cleaning of my studio apartment in about 45 minutes.
For me, as a professional cleaning lady, an average American tract home requires 2-3 hours to clean and large homes usually take closer to 4 or 5 hours.
If you live in a small home remember that it takes less time to clean and affords you more freedom for other things whenever you are tempted to move into something larger. Remember that and stay content.
Cleaning made easy even if your house is big…
If however, you are already in a larger home you can still follow this minimalist cleaning tip.
Simply minimize the space that you need to clean by minimizing the regular use of parts of your home if possible.
If you have a guest room or an extra bathroom consider shutting it off so that it only needs to be cleaned once in a while.
Cleaning Made Easy -Tip #2: Less Stuff!
I’ve cleaned a lot of houses and I’ve been surprised that some large houses are actually pretty easy to clean.
Why is that?
Because they aren’t cluttered.
The more knick-knacks and stuff people have lying around the longer it takes to move the stuff around and clean.
Here’s my next minimalist cleaning tip. Have less stuff!
When you can declutter and get down to what you really need then things will fit in the cabinets and closets where they should be. If you have decorations that are meaningful and make big statements it will make your house a home without making it hard to clean.
Decluttering is a magical solution that makes cleaning easy. The more you declutter the less you have to clean. But even when you’re house isn’t really clean it will still look cleaner with less stuff in it!
Tip #3: Get rid of unnecessary Decorations and doo-dads
If you want to simplify cleaning you need to declutter your home decor! Let go of unnecessary doo-dads and gadgets. This can be hard because we collect these little items as memories.
You may be the person who loves to collect shot glasses or snow globes from all your travels. Or maybe you are the one that has a million picture frames filled with family pictures on every flat surface. Maybe your even both!
Well, before I ask you to get rid of anything I’m gonna ask you to dust. Just see how that goes for you. Was it hard and tedious and no fun? Be honest, it was a CHORE.
Make Cleaning Easy By Avoiding Dust Catchers…
Now reevaluate your decorations and only keep and display the few that are truly meaningful and beautiful to you!
Try to pick a couple of bigger statements over a lot of little ones.
It’s not wrong to have a few pretty things that aren’t useful but you want your Swiffer dusting time to feel more like a swift-moving dance than a tedious chore! You want your house to look like a showcase not a pile of collections!
Tip #4: Have Less Stuff On the Counter-tops
I love to clean kitchens that have next to nothing on the countertops. You should not have so much in your cabinets that you can’t fit your lesser-used kitchen tools inside them.
I have a few things out in my kitchen, things I use every single day but I have my crockpot, popcorn maker, waffle iron, and air fryer in my limited cabinets.
The more of these items you can get in the cabinet the faster your kitchen clean-up will be and the cleaner your kitchen will look!
What about all my gel, makeup, lotion, and more?
You can simplify cleaning with this tip in your to bathrooms too.
Try not to have a countertop covered with toiletries. That’s what the vanity cabinet and any other cabinets you have in your bathroom are for.
It’s ok to have a couple of things out but don’t cover surfaces with 50 different shampoos and gels! Have a place for your toiletries, makeup, and jewelry, and put it back when you’re done with it!
Tip #5: Get Stuff Up and Off the Floors!
When you treat the floor like a storage space things get gross fast and it’s a pain in the neck to clean cause you have to pick everything up!
Make life easier and simplify cleaning by finding storage solutions that keep things up off the floors.
For example, hang your purse on a hook, put your shoes on a storage bench, use a rolling cart for miscellaneous items like potatoes and onions in the kitchen, or craft stuff, or toys.
I also favor furniture that has legs that raise it for an open look that is very easy to sweep under every time which keeps dust and pet hair from accumulating!
Tip #6: Choose Sleek and Smooth
When you are thinking about purchasing new items for your home whether it be decorative or actual remodeling stuff like fans, countertops, bathroom finishes, and so forth, think smooth!
Smooth surfaces with fewer lines are easier to clean and look cleaner too. It’s a small tweak but it will simplify cleaning A LOT!
Choosing clean lines and smooth surfaces will not only make cleaning easy but it will also make your minimalist home look like a sleek showcase!
Tip #7: Put Things Away
If you are a true minimalist it will be easy for everything to have a place and go directly there.
If you are more like me, an aspiring minimalist, you will still be finding ways to simplify and storage solutions that work for you and your home.
I think most people are in the latter category. So look for your trouble zones. What do you have a hard thing keeping put away?
Find the right solution for you!
For some people, it’s mail that covers their countertop. Get a mail organizer. This will not only help you to have your mail in a neat and tidy location but also will help you to make decisions about what mail you truly need to keep and what you need to throw away.
For other people, it’s clothing that makes their house a mess. Make sure you have a definite laundry basket, for each person if need be, and that you always put your clothes either in the bin or back where they go at the end of the day.
Nothing needs to be draped over chairs or ironing boards. One article of clothing will invite all its friends and the party that will turn into a rager that you will have a hard time kicking out on cleaning day! Just put it away!
Whatever your trouble zone is, take time to find a solution, either with a truly useful organizational product or a new habit! Ones you tame your trouble zones it will simplify cleaning a lot!
